With a growing need for learning designers in higher education, learning audiences are relying on these professionals to enhance learners’ abilities to engage in critical thinking, complex problem solving, collaboration decision-making and development of self-awareness and executive functioning. Universal design for learning (UDL) is a framework that promotes the design of flexible learning environments to accommodate and support a variety of learner differences. It is important that learning designers adhere to principles that support a universal design for learning to support learners with a variety of learning needs.
The increase in online instruction has posed challenges for learning designers in higher education, K-12, and business and industry. While studies have been conducted exploring the use of UDL principles, there is a paucity of research exploring the design challenges learning designers face adhering to UDL principles in an online environment.
